Since the 1950s, Laurel Canyon has been a neighborhood of innovative architecture, and this new project by the architecture firm Mutuo joins that long tradition. Tasked by the developer to create three homes on a steep downslope, the firm placed the homes dramatically against a 20-foot-high retaining wall, creating room for deeply shaded patios, plus extensive roof decks, for an abundance of outdoor space.

The simple palette of materials, with cedar shingles, whitewashed shotcrete (a type of industrial-grade stucco) and blackened steel, all evoke a mood rarely seen in the Hollywood Hills.

“Captain Marvel” star Brie Larson has bid farewell to the Hollywood Hills, selling her home in the Laurel Canyon area for $2.17 million, records show. It’ll chalk up as a loss for the Oscar-winning actress. Records show she bought the place in a trust more than that three years ago for $2.09 million. Flanked by lush landscaping and a small stream, the hillside home packs three bedrooms and three bathrooms into just under 3,000 square feet. Skylights punctuate rich beamed ceilings in the open living spaces, which flaunt clerestories, custom built-ins and floor-to-ceiling walls of glass. Just about every common room connects to a central courtyard with a turf dining area. There’s a double-height living room, a family room with a fireplace, a chandelier-topped dining area and a chic kitchen with custom cabinetry and a split-level island. The master suite spans the entire backside of the home, opening to a remodeled bathroom, a spacious closet and a secluded outdoor spa. Larson, 29, starred in the films “Short Term 12” and “The Spectacular Now” before winning the Academy Award for lead actress for her role in 2015’s “Room.” Her big-budget projects since then include “Kong: Skull Island,” “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

Marissa Faith of Deasy Penner Podley represented the buyer.

Brie Larson is unquestionably a big winner in Hollywood. The 29-year-old phenom took home an Oscar in 2015 for the indie drama “Room” and, following her star turn in “Captain Marvel,” she’s part of the celeb-packed ensemble cast of this year’s mega-blockbuster “Avengers: Endgame,” which has hauled in an astonishing almost $2.8 billion in worldwide receipts. However, the in-demand actress and budding film director (“Unicorn Store,” 2017) didn’t bring home any bacon on the sale of a thoroughly updated and smartly upgraded mid-century bungalow in Los Angeles’s near-mythic Laurel Canyon. She quietly acquired the property about three years ago for $2.25 million — $50,000 above the asking price — and has now sold it at a small loss for $2.17 million.

The buyer was represented by Marissa Faith at Deasy Penner Podley.

Other features of the 1,600-square-foot home include a recently renovated kitchen and a living area equipped with tile floors, beamed ceilings, skylights, and a fireplace.

You can find a property with an interesting history on the market in Los Angeles pretty much any day of the week, but very few are as fascinating as that of Laurel Canyon’s Wohlstetter House.

The International Modern-style home was designed by architect Josef Van der Kar in 1953. The son of Dutch immigrants, Van der Kar was a card-carrying Communist whose political activism made him a target of the House Un-American Activities Committee. The architect’s closest friends included fellow “radical” architect Gregory Ain and union organizer Henry Shire.

But surprisingly, Van der Kar’s inner circle also included neoconservative heroes Albert and Roberta Wohlstetter, a husband-wife team of foreign policy and nuclear arms strategists. A national security advisor to every president from Eisenhower to Reagan, Albert Wohlstetter was one of the inspirations for Stanley Kubrick’s nutty warmonger Dr. Strangelove.
